It looks at how each of the models understands child welfare, especially in the context of child protection and discusses the parents’ position therein. The book could inspire practitioners, researchers and policy makers to redefine child-focused practice and build systems where child welfare is considered paramount and is safeguarded throughout – first and foremost, well- -coordinated and targeted support of their families and, if that is not possible, thoroughly assessed and supported permanent out-of-family placements. Much light is shed on the elements of assessing risk and permanence planning. It’s suitable for those needing an overview, but also those wishing to explore the subject in depth. I highly recommend it. Her research interests include child and family support in the local environment and changes in civil society. She is a member of the Management Board of the Family Judges Association in Poland and of the General Committee of the International Association of Family Judges and Justices of the Peace. She holds the position of editor-in-chief of the scientific journal "Dziecko krzywdzone. Teoria, badania, praktyka" (Child Abused. Theory, Research, Practice), which is published by the Dajemy Dzieciom Siłę Foundation. Petr Fabián (ORCID 0000-0001-5144-9754) – studied philosophy, theology and special pedagogy. He prepared his doctoral thesis on the issue of introducing quality standards into the child protection system in the Czech Republic. He completed psychotherapeutic and supervisory training and led a therapeutic programme in a therapeutic community for children and young people abusing drugs (addictive substances). Fabián worked for 13 years as the director of an infant home, which he transformed into the Crisis Centre for Family and Child. He is a lecturer at the Silesian University in Opava, where he leads research projects concerning vulnerable children and families and social work with families. Another topic of interest to him professionally is social work with the elderly and the use of assistive technologies. At the same time, he works as a psychotherapist for non-governmental non-profit organisations. Currently, he is managing a new project, unique in the Czech Republic, called the Sluchátko therapeutic line, which aims to make systematic therapeutic help available. In some regions, it is used as a tool to support the deinstitutionalisation of psychiatric care. He publishes mainly on topics related to the family (vulnerable families and the needs of functional families), the e-Health system and paediatric patients. His most recent publication, "Možná to jde i jinak" (Maybe There’s a Different Way), published in 2021, presents a multidisciplinary approach to the theory and methods of social work. Albín Škoviera (ORCID 0000-0002-4534-5219) – graduated in special and therapeutic pedagogy at the Faculty of Arts at the Comenius University in Bratislava. He completed psychotherapeutic training focused on psychodynamics. For 18 years, he worked as a therapist and educator in special educational facilities, and from 1989, he was the director of the Children’s Diagnostic Institute in Bratislava for more than 12 years. Joanna Gorczowska – holds a Master’s degree in pedagogy, is a systemic practitioner and Gestalt psychotherapist. She has extensive experience of working in the child protection system in the UK as a social worker and, since 2012, as an independent social worker preparing systemic parenting assessments and special guardianship assessments for the UK family justice courts. She has worked with abused children, families at risk and foster families. She has published articles and presented papers at conferences in Poland highlighting good practices and solutions in the field of child protection. Currently, she also works as a psychotherapist. Her areas of interest include the impact of early childhood negative experiences on child development and functioning in adulthood and therapeutic support for people with traumatic experiences.

Publikacja obejmuje wybrane wyniki badań naukowych dotyczących problemów pol-skich rodzin oraz wyzwań i perspektyw polityki rodzinnej w Polsce, w różnych aspek-tach i wymiarach przestrzennych – przede wszystkim w wymiarze lokalnym. Zbiór otwiera artykuł dotyczący rządowych programów polityki rodzinnej powstałych po przełomie ustrojowym. Analiza ta stanowi istotną osnowę rozważań o szczegółowych obszarach polityki społecznej wobec rodziny, realizowanych na poziomie województw, powiatów i gmin. Należy bowiem mieć na uwadze, że w warunkach de¬centralizacji polityki rodzinnej państwa jest ona istotna nie tylko dla samej rodziny, ale także dla funkcjonowania samorządów, organizacji społecznych i innych podmiotów realizujących zadania na rzecz rodziny. Niezwykle ważne są własne inicjatywy samorządów na rzecz poprawy warunków funkcjonowania rodziny i realizacji przez nią podstawowych funkcji, m.in. prokreacyjnej, ekonomicznej, opiekuńczo-wychowawczej. Z tego też powodu interesujący jest artykuł dotyczący regionalnych (wojewódzkich) programów wspierania godzenia życia zawodowego z rodzinnym, uznawanych za kluczowe w polityce na rzecz podniesienia poziomu dzietności, a także tekst o polityce rodzinnej w strategiach rozwiązywania problemów społecznych w powiatach małopolski. W każdym z tych obszarów można też wyodrębnić szczegółowe problemy, które stają się wyzwaniem dla samorządowej polityki społecznej, w tym rodzinnej lub innych polityk szczegółowych. W tym kontekście warte uwagi są wyniki badań dotyczących specyficznej sytuacji samotnych kobiet, które pozbawione możliwości podziału obowiązków pomiędzy siebie i partnera, usiłują po¬wrócić na rynek pracy. Równie ciekawa jest analiza warunków działania nieformalnych form wsparcia rodzin w środowisku lokalnym. Dwa następne artykuły prezentują interesujące badania odnoszące się do funkcjonowania ustawowych instrumentów polityki rodzinnej wobec rodzin z dziećmi do lat trzech. Mowa o tradycyjnych żłobkach, które są rozwiązaniem najczęściej wybieranym przez rodziców małych dzieci, oraz o innowacyjnym rozwiązaniu, jakim jest opiekun dzienny. Publikację zamyka inspirująca analiza sytuacji przebywających w Norwegii polskich rodzin niewydolnych wychowawczo, a także funkcjonwania nordyckich instytucji chroniących interesy dzieci, głównie Służby Ochrony Praw Dzieci (Barnevernet). Redaktorzy opracowania serdecznie dziękują wszystkim Autorom artykułów, którzy poprzez ich złożenie poparli inicjatywę wydania tej publikacji, a poprzez zamieszczone treści wyrazili swoje przekonanie o potrzebie dalszego rozwoju badań poświęconych tematyce rodziny i polityki rodzinnej. This issue of Sociological Review commemorates the 25th anniversary of the adoption by the UN General Assembly of The Convention on the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1989. It should be recalled that the beginnings of children’s studies and the sociology of childhood coincided in time with the introduction of this treaty, which established international standards for children’s protection and development. The Convention aims at safeguarding the youngest society members from different forms of abuse, exploitation and violence, as well as at promoting their rights to a decent standard of living and to broad social participation. The authors of the articles presented herein, representing the current sociological attitude towards children and youth, follow these assumptions. The articles thus mirror some important attributes of contemporary children’s studies – its cognitive multidimensionality, differentiated quantitative and qualitative methodologies, the shift from “research on children” to “research with children”, scholars’ interest in the results of comparative studies (especially the results of natural sciences), and the concern about the practical implementation of research outcomes. The main topics tackled in this collection of texts are children’s poverty and social inequalities rooted in the first phase of their life cycle, suffering and various risks experienced by children and teenagers, framed in both the national and international contexts, as well as children’s quality of life, youngsters’ well-being, youth participation, civic engagement and the new concept of investing in children. Children, considered as equal social actors and citizens – although still most vulnerable to abuse, discrimination and social exclusion – are presented in the framework of their complicated networks of relationships with peers, adults, collectivities and societies, the welfare state, social policy institutions and other organizations, with the notion to important factors decisive for their present life and their future.
